Frozen Over

The area my school is in has been experiencing some very cold weather due to that arctic air mass that has come our way. Temperatures have been below freezing, even during the day, and the lake has been frozen over for two or more days! I know it's very solid because I went for a walk on it today, though I wasn't stupid enough to walk out to the middle where the sun had been shining on it all day. And what do I think of all this? I love it! Bring the cold weather on! All I want in return is snow and we've gotten some accumulation, but nowhere near enough in my opinion. I shall try to upload a picture of the lake as soon as possible, that is, if the lake remains frozen till I have a chance to walk down there with camera in hand. The rising temperatures have me worried that the lake might deice itself soon.

Anyways, my walk on the lake coincided with my first day of classes. Yes, the break is finally over and we have to do homework again. However, it is good to be back with my friends even though I don't much like the homework aspect of it. Today was nice though because all my classes didn't meet so I had most of the day to myself. Of course, most of that time was spent convincing myself to start working on the homework I've already been assigned. I can't wait till tomorrow though because that is when my poetry class starts. Both my English classes are on the same days. That is going to make things interesting when exam time rolls around.

I am pleased to announce that my dana did wonderfully during classes today when I used it to take notes and keep track of my schedule. It most certainly lightens my load when it comes to all the things I stuff into my backpack.

1 Day till Christmas!

It's almost here! Christmas is just beyond reach with all the fun and joy that it brings. Of course, we can't forget the reason for the season and that is the birth of Jesus as a human baby. That is the most significant thing that has ever happened on a Christmas. Of course, some would argue that Jesus's birth wasn't on December 25th, but even if it isn't, December 25th is still the day picked out to celebrate his birth on - no matter when he was born.

A snowflake is a typical symbol of winter. It along with snowmen hail us from shop windows and peek out from Christmas trees. However, most don't think of what snow really stands for. Snow, when it first falls, is pure and white and is a great symbol of Christmas as well as winter in general. This glass snowflake ornament on our tree is one of my favorite ornaments. It is so pretty and delicate, hanging there illuminated by the lights on the tree. But, one should always remember the story behind the symbol and so one should always remember that a snowflake stands for more than just winter and cold, but for the purity of how God's creation was, before we came along and messed it up in the Fall.

Second Snow and it Sticks!

Ah, the title states it all! We had snow all last night and today. Classes were cancelled and it was a very lovely day. I even got to throw a snowball at a friend. The snow was very dry and didn't stick together well, but I got it to stick together eventually. Perhaps the warmth of my hands helped. Anyways, unlike my last post for when it snowed in October, this time I have pictures! They were taken by the friend that I threw the snowball at. She's so nice to me. I shall leave you with the pictures.

Another Interesting Quote

I have found a really neat quote by Benjamin Franklin which relates perfectly to all types of writing (though I think he only intended it to refer to scholarly essays and such). I found it in some assigned reading that I have to do for my position as a writing tutor. This is found under the chapter about Cohesion and Coherence. (Note: Capitalization his not mine. They wrote like that for some reason.)

If he would inform, he must advance regularly from Things known to things unknown, distinctly without Confusion, and the lower he begins the better. It is a common Fault in Writers, to allow their Readers too much knowledge: They begin with that which should be in the Middle, and skipping backwards and forwards, 'tis impossible for any one but he who is perfect in the Subject before, to understand their Work, and such an one has no Occasion to read it.

This is very applicable to writing. You do have to start with things that are common or shared knowledge before you proceed onto things unknown to the reader. We mustn't confuse our readers, but rather make it clear and logical.

Also, to update my writing progress, I'm almost done with the 1st draft of my big 1 Act play for my Playwriting class. It's going to be a total of 6 scenes. I just hope it's short enough for her, because I'll probabaly have to add in more.

On an aside note, NaNo is 3 days away! (And it also snowed more this morning and some of it stuck, but now it's melted. Oh well.)

First Snow of the Season!

The title says it all today! We just had our first snow of the season today. It quite amazed us that it came this early. It's not even November yet! Alas, it will not stick (to the ground at least) because the ground is not cold enough. However, there should still be some left over on cars tomorrow morning. I have a secret wish that they will cancel classes tomorrow morning, which they do sometimes, though it would not affect me because my first class is at 12:30 pm. Ah well, at least I got to dance in the snow and sleet today and it was fun and cold! I'll have to retrieve a picture from my friend of our capers outside the dorm, because I have no camera and therefore no picture of this glorious event.

On another note, NaNo is only 4 days away! Yay! I am very excited.
